A Landmark of Knowledge and Craftsmanship
In the heart of Westchester Square, the Huntington Free Library stands as a testament to Bronx history and civic pride. Founded in 1896 by railroad magnate and philanthropist Collis P. Huntington, the building remains one of New York City’s most enduring landmarks — a rare example of late-19th-century architecture that continues to serve its community more than a century later. When Right Path Windows & Doors was commissioned to restore the library’s historic wood windows, fascia boards, and soffits, our goal was simple but essential: preserve, not replace.
Building Information
Type of Building: Public Library / Historic Landmark
Location: 9 Westchester Square The Bronx, NY 10461
Year Built: 1896
Restoration Completed: 2020s
Why Restoration Was Needed
After decades of exposure to New York’s harsh seasons, the library’s original windows had suffered extensive deterioration:
- Rotted wood and cracked joints
- Peeling paint and water infiltration
- Sun-damaged finishes and failed glazing putty
Quick fixes with modern fillers had only worsened the condition over time. Authentic restoration was the only responsible way forward — not only to preserve the building envelope but to protect the craftsmanship that defined the library’s original construction.
The Right Path Approach
Our restoration team carried out a comprehensive renewal of the windows, fascia boards, and soffits, balancing historical accuracy with modern performance standards.
Scope of Work:
- Careful dismantling and assessment of each sash and frame
- Replacement of broken glass and missing hardware
- Dutch patching and marine-grade epoxy repair of rotted wood
- Installation of new sills and minor frame components
- Scraping, sanding, priming, and finish painting
- Reglazing and weatherproofing for long-term protection
- Replacing and missing hardware upgrading brass chains.
- Restoring of fascia boards and soffits
Each restored unit now looks and functions as it did when the library first opened its doors in 1896 — but with the durability and weather resistance required for the next century.
Craftsmanship Meets Preservation
This project wasn’t just maintenance — it was heritage conservation.
Our team carefully retained original profiles and joinery, used historically accurate glazing compounds, and finished with high-performance coatings designed to endure New York’s climate. Wherever possible, original glass was preserved to maintain the visual authenticity of the façade. The result is a revitalized exterior that reflects both the library’s legacy and Right Path’s commitment to precision craftsmanship.
Why It Matters
Every landmark tells a story — and every restoration safeguards that story for the future.
At the Huntington Free Library, we honored both the building’s history and the craftsmanship of its makers, ensuring that this Bronx treasure continues to inspire the community it has served for over a century. That’s the Right Path Way — restoring history with care, respect, and precision.
