History of the 1209 Lexington Avenue Entry Doors
Lexington Avenue, especially in the 80s and 90s blocks, is lined with classic prewar buildings. Understated institutions quietly anchor the Upper East Side’s architectural identity. 1209 Lexington Avenue is part of this fabric. It is a mid-block building that blends into its neighbors. However, it carries all the signatures of historic NYC elegance. These include oversize wood entry doors, transoms, and carved stone framing that reflect a quieter time in New York design.
Why
The existing entry doors at Warby Parker’s Upper East Side location had deteriorated significantly. Refinishing could no longer restore them to the necessary level of quality. Proper function in this high-traffic retail space was required. The doors no longer operated properly. They had lost their structural alignment. Drafts and water infiltration compromised security, comfort, and overall storefront presentation. Over time, makeshift repairs and mismatched hardware further detracted from the original design intent.
How
Right Path was brought in to deliver a fully custom, pre-hung double door system. It was fabricated in white oak. The design reflects the proportions and panel detailing of the original architecture. At over 96″ in height and 60″ wide, this oversize entry required both precision craftsmanship and expert field coordination. We used 2¼” thick door panels, Low-E tempered insulated glass, and custom-milled mouldings. As a result, the design replicated historic character while also improving energy performance.
The hardware package blended functionality and aesthetics. It included Baldwin ball-bearing hinges, flush bolts, and closers. Brass kick plates and reinstalled original door pulls were also included. All components were coordinated through our shop drawings and field-verification process. Our installation team carefully removed the existing frame. They flashed the opening. Then they reinstalled the new unit square, level, and sealed it. This was done using high-performance caulk and an ADA-compliant threshold.
